According to Greg Hunter, they're still alive, but were missing for many years.Nathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17838510995365876113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18996311.post-20236266288507163612012-04-13T19:23:42.112-05:002012-04-13T19:23:42.112-05:00I think it's simply a matter of Baum's sta...I think it's simply a matter of Baum's stated philosophy of no heart-ache. It's less stressful to be separated from an Aunt and Uncle rather than one's parents. Also, Dorothy is so explicity presented as a stand-on-her-own independent sort of girl and its harder to present Dot as the self-reliant type if she has parents.

I stink Baum viewed parents negatively - he got rid of them every time he could! They were the people who said, "no." And he's a big kid wanting to write adventures so he frees Dot from that burden.

@SFA - I have NEVER heard of anyone suggest Dorothy came from Oz except fro the universally condemned 1925 film of course.David Maxinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12672089188117065118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18996311.post-71197919953038077002012-04-11T14:36:57.485-05:002012-04-11T14:36:57.485-05:00It's interesting, I know a lot of people want ...It's interesting, I know a lot of people want to think of Dorothy as someone who originated in Oz, but that doesn't sit too well with me.

I've always thought of Betsy as a preteen who was orphaned when her parents died on the ship, but I felt that Baum just left out the details.

Some people have said Betsy may have been an aristocrat (since she talks about traveling in Hungry Tiger and of subways) so maybe her parents were business types who left her in the care of others?

I have honestly never thought of Jenny Jump's parents...but as you said, maybe she was considered an adult (Was she sixteen?) and already on her own back in those days.saintfighteraquahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16195760262262189059noreply@blogger.com
