Happy Friday, kids! On Wednesday, Disney released the first official poster for Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful, which hits U.S. theaters in March of next year. They also launched a Facebook page, which you can check out here.
Speaking of Oz: The Great and Powerful, the movie is filming additional scenes in Los Angeles this month, and they are looking for extras! For more information on the casting call, click here.
Last weekend, I got to meet the wonderful Eliza Swenson and Noel Thurman, who both star in Dorothy and the Witches of Oz. There was a screening of the movie and a Q&A afterwords. Director Leigh Scott said that Oz fans can expect a DVD/Blu-Ray release of the film sometime in the fall.
Dorothy of Oz: Prequel #3 was released this week through IDW. I was able to grab a copy yesterday, and I am not impressed with this series so far. I think that a four issue comic series is too much for this kind of thing.
That is all for this week!
Sorry to hear. I've been getting great comments on my part and some pretty decent reviews on the book as a whole, so it just goes to show you, "you can't please everyone." *shrug*
ReplyDeleteThanks for picking it up anyway.
Cheers,

I really like the artwork, though (inside and out). I just wish that the story was better. And it's not necessarily Denton Tipton's fault. There's just no room for a story. Especially since the movie is supposed to take place the day after the events of "The Wizard of Oz".
ReplyDeleteMaybe it would be better if it was just one comic instead of four. That way you don't need to make up a story. You can just establish who the Jester is, what his goals are, and how the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion are planning to bring Dorothy back.
In the second and third issues, the characters venture out on ultimately unsuccessful journeys around Oz to find a rainbow. And in the end, they figure out that they could have made a rainbow back at the Emerald City, where they just came from...
I don't think it will be remembered among other Oz comics just because of its lack of originality, but it's a nice little piece of merchandise for the "Dorothy of Oz" movie.
Your opinion is quite clear. But realize it is not the _only_ opinion. I understand from conversations with many Oz fans - both die-hard and "I was fond of it (meaning the '39 film)" - that Roger Baum's Dorothy of Oz isn't the most beloved book out there. And it's obvious the CGI film is aimed squarely at children and/or those that think the '39 film is the be-all-end-all of Oz.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, since the IDW series has hit the shelves, I've had many adults and children (especially children where this has been their FIRST comic book) that they love the series, and like it as a fun break from either 1) the rest of their comic reading 2) just their stressful lives in general.
I have a feeling those people/children will remember it for a long time. Hence my first comment. It doesn't refute or deny your own opinion of the piece, just an example of how maybe _you_ won't remember this in ten years time, but you are not the only one buying.
Cheers,
